Thankful for @D6family and Orange! #kidmin

This month is all about being thankful and reflecting on what we are thankful for as Thanksgiving approaches. Recently, I’ve been thinking about how Orange and D6 do things and how we can involve God in our everyday conversations with kids. It can be as a simple as asking a two year old if they know who made the grass or the trees or talking about taking care of the earth while on a walk with a 4 year old when they mention the litter someone threw on the grass.

It’s within both Orange and D6 where you really begin to see the family and the church coming together to raise the kids. They are taught one thing at church and the parents are given tools to reinforce that concept at home through simple everyday conversations such as when they wake up in the morning, in the car, and before bed. It’s talking about God and biblical principles as we go throughout our day in a simple, non threatening way.

Just the idea of thinking about those families who know Jesus but are not being intentional about taking the simple everyday opportunities to talk about Jesus. If we can count the cars aloud as a child hands them to us as a way of introducing them to counting before they go to preschool then surely we can introduce Jesus to their young world as well as we go about our day.

From Deuteronomy 6 comes the idea of where D6 and the D6 Family gets their name:

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when

  • you sit at home and when you walk along the road,
  • when you lie down and when you get up.
  • Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.”
We may not be in Old Testament times but much of what is said here can still apply to us today. I am thankful that we can learn about God and have the freedom to impress the greatness of our God and the Bible upon the hearts of our children or those we care for.
Does your church use Orange or D6 curriculum or have a family ministry? How are you impressing God on the hearts of your children as you go throughout your day?
